The Hacktory heads to The Next HOPE

The Next HOPE

Thousand of hackers are heading to New York City this Fri/Sat/Sun (July 16-18) for The Next HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth) - the largest hacker gathering on the east coast and a biennial tradition since 1994.

Over 100 speakers in four tracks over three days will present a plethora of interesting topics to the curious, and dozens of demos, exhibits, projects, and workshops will guarantee a good time for all.

The Hacktory will host a table in the Hackerspace Village, where other hackerspaces from around the world will demo their work and share ideas about their projects. Artist Wil Lindsay will present his homebrew electronic visual art, and kinetic sculptor Brad Litwin will demo his amazing interactive creations.

Friday night Wil Lindsay and Don Miller will dazzle a chiptunes concert audience with their mesmerizing visuals, while Cheap Dinosaurs and Animalstyle will perform awesome music with modified electronic games and instruments.

The Next HOPE is something that can't be adequately described and must be experienced. Most HOPE attendees are repeat comers, and prepare two years for The Next HOPE. Stop by and meet The Hacktory staff, and enjoy what promises to be a very memorable, educational, and fun event.

By popular demand, The Hacktory again offers its fun and unique Recycled Electronics Jewelry workshop, on Saturday, December 5 from 1:00-5:00pm. Perfect timing for making cool holiday gifts on a budget!

The Hacktory's mission is to promote new ways of combining art and technology and recycling, so we created the Recycled Electronic Jewelry Workshop. Our summer workshop was sold out--everyone loved making and taking home their amazing-looking creations!

We'll be teaching basic jewelry-making concepts to people of all skill and age levels (10 years old and up), including design ideas, basic soldering and assembly skills, and how to identify materials for creating your own jewelry and small sculpture.

This workshop adds beauty and interest to the world by reclaiming and recycling things that would typically end up in our growing landfills. It's also great fun and sparks creativity in all who participate.

The cost to participate is only $20, which includes all supplies and materials including basic jewelry parts and a nice selection of awesome-looking retro electronic components for making your own creations.

July 25 Drawdio Workshop Previewed in City Paper

City Paper blogger Morgan Davis wrote a nice piece in this week's print and web edition about The Hacktory's second(!) Drawdio workshop this Saturday 1:00-4:00pm.

http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2009/07/23/drawdio

Our first Drawdio workshop June 22 was packed and successful--and people were clamoring for more--so we're doing it again!

This second workshop will feature a more polished feel (we learned!) and use the latest Drawdio PCB design by LadyAda. All this publicity may result in another sold-out event, so reserve your seat now!

The Hacktory + 8static: Chiptunes Concert and Hands-on Exhibit at Vintage Computer Festival 6.0

The Hacktory and 8static are pleased to announce the first 8-bit chiptunes concert and hands-on demo to ever be held at the Vintage Computer Festival in Wall Township, NJ on Sept 12-13, 2009

8static is a monthly chiptunes concert in Philadelphia organized by Don Miller (aka No-Carrier) and sponsored by The Hacktory. Artists from around the world perform awesome electronic music to stunning 8-bit projected visuals at 8static using repurposed classic computers and video game consoles.

At the 6th annual Vintage Computer Festival you can get a behind-the-scenes look at these classic computers and video games. From the Commodore 64 and Atari 2600, to the Game Boy and NES, you can try out some of the custom hardware interfaces and software that world-famous chip musicians and visualists use to create retro electronic art.

The entire VCF East 6.0 weekend will be an open celebration of pre-modern computers and related vintage and classic electronic technologies. Exhibits are hands-on and exhibitors will have live demos all weekend. Prizes will be awarded to the best exhibitors in each category.

There will be fascinating lectures both mornings, hands-on exhibits both afternoons, and special events held throughout the weekend. A preliminary list of VCF East 6.0 exhibits is online now, but is being updated as new exhibitors sign on. Don't miss this exciting event!
